About this artwork

Pieter Brueghel The Younger was the offspring of Pieter Bruegel The Elder, a standout figure in the Dutch Renaissance and a groundbreaker in genre painting. His son created a ton of replicas of his work, which helped in spreading his art across the globe. 'Winter Landscape with Skaters and a Bird Trap' portrays a local village scene with residents ice skating on a frozen river. This painting holds the record as the most popular within the Bruegel family lineage, with over 127 reproductions made during the 17th century.

About the artist

Pieter Brueghel The Younger (1564-1638) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman, the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. He was a member of the Brueghel family of artists, and was known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was heavily influenced by his father's work, and also by the work of his uncle, Jan Brueghel the Elder. He was a prolific painter, producing over 100 paintings and drawings in his lifetime. He was also known for his engravings and book illustrations. He was a court painter to the governors of the Southern Netherlands, and was also a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke.
