About this artwork

Pieter Brueghel The Elder holds a significant place in the Dutch Renaissance art scene as a forefather of genre painting. His son, Pieter Brueghel The Younger, was greatly influenced by his dad's distinct style, and this is evident in many of his artworks, including 'A Village Fair (Village festival in Honour of Saint Hubert and Saint Anthony)'. In this painting, you'll notice on the right, they're carrying effigies of Saints Anthony and Hubert in a procession while observers look on. Plus, the painting features scenes of people eating and drinking all over the canvas.

About the artist

Pieter Brueghel The Younger (1564-1638) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman, the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. He was a member of the Brueghel family of artists, and was known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. He was heavily influenced by his father's work, and also by the work of his uncle, Jan Brueghel the Elder. He was a prolific painter, producing over 100 paintings and drawings in his lifetime. He was also known for his engravings and book illustrations. He was a court painter to the governors of the Southern Netherlands, and was also a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke.
