About this artwork
This excellent print draws its inspiration from a color-filled, hand-completed stipple engraving called Gailliarda (Gaillardia). The original engraving was created by Victor, who was active between 1820 and 1850, and was based on an original work by Pierre Joseph Redouté, who lived from 1759 to 1840. The inspiration can be traced back to P. J. Redouté's Choix des plus belles fleurs, a collection that was gradually published in parts - with each part containing four plates - in Paris over the period from 1827 to 1833. This print is featured on Plate 46.
