About this artwork

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a notable 19th-century French artist, played a major role in shaping the Impressionist art style. "La Loge" is one of his well known works, which showcases a young duo in a Paris theatre box. The female subject on the canvas is based on Nini Lopez, a model frequently used by Renoir, and is accompanied by the artist's brother, Edmond. The theatre scene wasn't just about enjoying the show back then, it was a significant social event. It's reflected in the painting where the woman leans forward, making sure she's seen and noticed.

About the artist

Pierre Auguste Renoir (25 February 1841 – 3 December 1919) was a French Impressionist painter who was a leading figure in the development of the movement. He was one of the most prolific and influential painters of the 19th century, and his works are characterised by their vibrant light and saturated colour. Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, and studied art in Paris. He was a close friend of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and his works are often compared to those of the other Impressionists. Renoir was also a prolific sculptor, and his works are found in many public collections. He was married twice and had seven children, four of whom became painters.
