About the artist
Zec's educational journey began at Stanhope Elementary School, from where he transitioned to St Martin's School of Art on a scholarship at thirteen. Initially working in advertising, Zec pivoted to political cartooning due to his disdain for the emergence of fascism. Intriguingly, he was listed among individuals the Nazis intended to arrest in the event of a British invasion during World War II.
Zec's contribution to the Daily Mirror, especially his VE-day cartoon, received significant recognition. This artwork, showing a wounded soldier passing on a victory laurel symbolizing European peace, carried a profound message: "Here you are. Don't lose it again!". It was instrumental in the Labour Party's 1945 general election campaign. Post-war, Zec ascended to directorship at the Daily Mirror, leading the strip-cartoon department.
