About the artist

Dr. Peter Graham (1836-1921) was a prodigious young man who displayed remarkable talents in various fields while at school. His passion for the arts, however, soon took the center stage. By fifteen, his academic prowess was clear as he tutored peers barely younger than himself, reflecting his literary inclinations and diverse tastes. Graham's art education took root at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh, mentored by Robert Scott Lauder. Initially, his works revolved around figure subjects, but an enchanting vacation in Deeside in 1859 turned his focus towards landscape painting.

Born into a family steeped in culture, Graham found himself drawn to other forms of art from a young age, particularly music. He demonstrated considerable prowess in both vocal and instrumental music, but the demands of his artwork curtailed his further development in this area.

His grand paintings, designed to capture the sublime beauty of the Scottish Highlands, drew significant influence from the artwork of Horatio McCulloch and the poetry of Sir Walter Scott. His commitment to portraying the landscapes' awe-inspiring majesty resonated deeply with the audiences. Graham's success extended beyond the Royal Scottish Academy, reaching the Royal Academy in London in 1866.
