About the artist
Vézelay was a rare British member of the Abstraction-Création group, which she joined in 1934. Aside from her Surrealist-inspired pieces from the 1930s and her wartime sketches, she is recognised as the first British artist to wholly embrace abstract art. After returning to England in 1939, her public visibility waned until a retrospective at the Tate Gallery in 1983. A multi-disciplinarian, Vézelay's work, including painting, sculpture, and engraving, is characterised by its subtle allure and refined simplicity.
