About the artist
Michael has always been drawn to the power of small paintings, especially those born from direct observation of, and reaction to, a subject. He believes these pieces often carry more emotional weight and resonance than larger, meticulously resolved studio works.
Michael's palette is deliberately limited, aimed at achieving well-balanced results that showcase a wide tonal range. This not only enhances the mood of his paintings, but also adds a sense of immediacy and directness.
Influences on his style are evident from his early years. Michael was impressed by Sickert and the Nabis School, and you can see clear nods to Constable's oil sketches in his work. His formal art education took place in his later school years, followed by a stint at Academie Julien, Paris in the early 60s. But it wasn't until much later that he fully dedicated himself to refining his craft.
