About the artist

Morris, born in 1862 to Jane and William of Arts and Crafts renown, carved a path for herself as a prominent figure in the movement's second wave. She began her career in the early 1880s after attending the National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art. Her family's thriving interior decor firm, Morris & Co., provided her financial backing. From 1885 to 1896, she successfully steered the family business's embroidery workshop, lectured about historical textiles, and privately tutored embroidery.

well known as a prominent designer and textile maker, Morris was a key contributor to the enduring legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement, creating superb late 19th-century embroideries. She found inspiration in nature, describing landscapes and seascapes with jewel-like metaphors. Birds, an enduring fascination for her, are evident in her sketches and designs.

She led a contented life at Kelmscott, surrounded by a small animal menagerie, while cherishing simple pleasures like reading, gardening, and bike rides. According to Bernard Shaw, her personality juxtaposed "fire and ice".
