About this artwork

Margaret Meen's 1787 watercolour on vellum illustration of Passiflora vespertilio has been turned into a high-grade print. Meen, originally from Bungay, Suffolk in England, relocated to London to give lessons on flower painting. From 1775 to 1785, her work was showcased at the Royal Academy. She even published a book in 1790 named 'Exotic plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew' that featured her art.

About the artist

Born in Suffolk in December 1751, Margaret Meen became a remarkably talented amateur flower painter, spending most of her life in London to nurture her craft and teaching career. Despite uncertainty about the origins of her artwork, her affluent upbringing and brother Henry's society status likely provided her artistic education.

She contributed greatly to 18th and 19th-century British botanical history, skillfully illustrating exotic plants for Kew Gardens and launching the short-lived publication, "Exotic Plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew" in 1790. Notably, she taught Queen Charlotte and the Royal Princesses, and her masterpieces adorned the interiors of royal residences and scientific institutions. From 1775 to 1785, she was a memeber of and displated at the Royal Academy.
