About the artist

Luigi Mayer (1755–1803), a notable Italian-German artist, was a pioneering figure in late 18th-century European painting, specifically focused on the Ottoman Empire.

From 1776 to 1794, Mayer journeyed widely throughout the Ottoman Empire. He earned fame for his sketches and paintings, which predominantly featured panoramic landscapes from the Balkans to the Greek Islands, Turkey, and Egypt. His works on ancient monuments and the Nile offered a unique perspective on the Middle East during that era, thus proving to be of immense historical value.
