Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, Libby Smart relocated to Charlotte after completing her education in 1985. In 1993, she launched her own decorative painting venture, a successful endeavor she ran for twelve years before transitioning to fine art. Local artist Andy Braitman became her mentor for six years, shaping her studies in the field.

Libby also attended workshops by several esteemed artists nationwide, which helped to shape her distinctive painting style.
