This particular print showcases the costume design he created for the character Bacchante, which was used in the first series of Greek-themed ballets he did for the Ballet Russes. About the artist

Léon Bakst, a trailblazing artist born in Russia in 1866, was part of a fresh wave of European artists who broke away from the conventional 19th-century stage realism, sparking a revolution in theatrical design. From a tender age, Bakst showed a deep love for visual arts. He bagged first place in a drawing competition at 12 and resolved to become a painter. He later refined his skills at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts and earned a living as a part-time book illustrator.

In the dawn of the 1900s, Bakst ventured into stage design and by 1909, he moved to Paris. There, he created stage sets and costumes for Diaghilev's emerging ballet company. Bakst was well known for his ornate costumes, lavishly adorned with a diverse range of motifs and decorative elements. His costumes featured a rich combination of textures, blending appliqué, painting, dyeing and embroidery with elements like flocking, beading, sequins, metal studs, braids, pearls and jewels.

Bakst's exceptional designs extended beyond the stage into fashion and interior design. He introduced relaxed clothing styles and replaced dull colours, bringing a refreshing twist to both industries.
