About this artwork

L.S Lowry created the artwork 'On the sands Berwick on Tweed' in 1959. Known for his signature style of depicting bustling urban scenes in northern England, complete with his famous 'matchstick men', Lowry's work often held a strong fascination for the sea. This is evident in a number of his seascapes, including this specific piece that showcases holiday-goers at the Berwick on Tweed beach in Northumberland. Although the sea is faintly visible in the backdrop, the painting's central focus lies on the pavilion's activities, an iconic structure that was slated for demolition in the 1990s but was spared, thanks to Lowry's depiction.

About the artist

L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was an English artist known for his urban landscapes of industrial scenes in the North of England. He was a self-taught artist, and his style was a combination of Impressionism and Expressionism. He was influenced by the works of French Impressionists such as Monet and Pissarro, as well as the English artist, William Hogarth. Lowry was a shy and reclusive man, and his works often depicted the loneliness of the industrial city. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1968.
