About the artist

well known English artist and architectural theoretician, Joseph Michael Gandy ARA (1771–1843), is best remembered for his vibrant paintings that showcased the architectural designs of Sir John Soane. He collaborated closely with Soane from 1798 to 1809, serving as both a draftsman and a creative ally, before branching off to establish his own practice.

Despite his commercial struggles that led to two stints in a debtor's prison, Gandy's exhibited and published works garnered significant critical acclaim and public admiration. His paintings, characterised by a dramatic two-point perspective and meticulous architectural accuracy, mirror his interest in Roman ruins. Gandy's fantastical architectural imaginings, teeming with historical, literary, and mythological influences, clearly pay homage to Piranesi.
