About the artist

Born in Wunstorf on 5 January 1893 and died in Nürnberg on 2 December 1948, Joost Schmidt was a well known German typographer and a graphic design visionary. He taught at the Bauhaus and later became a professor at the College of Visual Arts in Berlin. His claim to fame was the design of the iconic poster for the 1923 Bauhaus Exhibition in Weimar, Germany.

Schmidt started his journey in the realm of art at the Grand-Ducal Saxon Academy of Fine Art in Weimar. He then advanced his studies at the Bauhaus School from 1919 to 1925, specializing in the wood-carving workshop. Under the mentorship of Max Thedy, he excelled and earned his painting diploma in the winter semester of 1913/1914.
