About the artist
Originally from East London's Dagenham, John Wilsher relocated to Sheffield as a student. After his PGCE, he spent 37 years as a German language instructor in a Sheffield comprehensive school. Around his 50th birthday, encouraged by his wife's friend's art class tale, he ventured into painting. Dissatisfied with his teaching job, he found solace in art and pursued a formal education at Chesterfield College and the University of Huddersfield, graduating in 2016. John now paints in his rented Exchange Place studio in Sheffield.
A friend used to run a blues festival in Sheffield and asked if John would do some paintings. He painted portraits of blues artists like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Now his works also include Amy Winehouse, Richard Hawley, and athletes. John believes in expressing emotion vividly through his paintings, particularly when portraying passionate musicians.
