About this artwork

John William Waterhouse, an English painter, was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This was a collective of artists, critics, and poets from the mid-19th century who were dedicated to portraying traditional themes like religion with refined arrangements and great attention to detail. His painting 'The Soul of the Rose' drew inspiration from Geoffrey Chaucer's dream-inspired poem, 'Romaunt of the Rose'.

About the artist

John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter known for his depictions of classical and mythological themes. He was influenced by the works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, and was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Waterhouse was born in Rome, Italy, and moved to London in 1854. He was a prolific painter, producing over 200 works in his lifetime, and was known for his use of vibrant colours and attention to detail. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
