About the artist

Born in Scotland in 1836 and passing away around 1913, J.L. Macfarlane FRHS was a well known botanical illustrator and lithographer. After training at Paisley Art School, he built his career in London. Remarkably, Macfarlane was among the pioneers employed by the RHS to portray award-winning orchids. He created numerous plates for nurserymen like William Bull, Thomas Cripps, and B.S. Williams, and also contributed to several horticultural magazines such as 'The Florist and Pomologist'.

His illustrations of orchids were extraordinarily realistic, imbued with a vibrant quality that beautifully captured the soft petals, textured leaves, and stems of the plants. Each distinguishing feature was depicted in stunning detail, resulting in some of the most exquisite orchid images ever offered on the market.

Notably, J. L. MacFarlane was among the prominent 19th-century botanical artists who specialised in orchids. His work contributed to an orchid mania reminiscent of the tulip frenzy in Holland two centuries prior, where a single orchid could fetch the modern equivalent of £30,000.
