About the artist
English composer, actor, author and botanist, Sir John Hill, made noteworthy contributions to periodicals of his time. He's known for his clashes with poets, playwrights, and scientists in the literary world. He's notably remembered for his illustrative piece, The Vegetable System, which was one of the first to utilise Carl Linnaeus' nomenclature. For his significant efforts, the Swedish King Gustav III knighted him in 1774 as part of the Order of Vasa, after which he referred to himself as Sir John Hill.
Between the years of 1759 and 1775, he devoted himself to a substantial botanical project, The Vegetable System. This work spanned 26 folio volumes and was beautifully decorated with about 1,600 copper-plate engravings.
