About this artwork

Johannes Vermeer, a painter from the Dutch Baroque Period, was particularly skilled in illustrating domestic interior scenes. He is celebrated for his brilliant and meticulous use of light in his pieces, often taking great care in his approach and using high-cost pigments. In 1668, he finished one of his notable works, 'The Art of Painting', which showcases the artist capturing a woman's image in front of a grand map in his art studio. The print highlights a detailed close-up of the woman who is modelling, clad in a blue outfit.

About the artist

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter who is known for his masterful use of light and colour. He was a member of the Delft School, a group of Dutch Golden Age painters who were active in the city of Delft. Vermeer's works are known for their realism and attention to detail, and his use of light and colour has been widely admired. He was also known for his use of symbolism and allegory in his works. Vermeer's personal life is largely unknown, but it is believed that he had a large family and was a successful art dealer.
