About the artist
Born in Cincinnati in 1935, Dine was just twelve when his mother died. He spent his youth in his grandfather's hardware store, cultivating a deep appreciation for hand tools that would later become a recurring theme in his work.
Dine's popularity exploded in the 1960s, when he was identified with pop art, though he always maintained a focus on inner essence. Even as he moved towards life drawing in the mid-'70s, drawing remained central to Dine's artistic expression.
