About the artist
She began her career teaching art to kindergarten through eighth-grade students for half a decade, before finding time to create her own art while teaching and waiting tables. Upon turning 30, she made the decision to focus on her art full time and left her teaching role. Unfortunately, the 2008 economic downturn caused all the galleries she was involved with to close down. This led her to diversify her artistic portfolio by establishing Jenny Pennywood, a line focused on graphic design and textiles. Working under this pseudonym allowed her to explore her creativity even further.
Garrido approaches her art with a careful equilibrium between choice and process. Her work springs from a deep, personal narrative, responding to internal dialogues, and the paint or drawing materials at her disposal. These elements merge seamlessly on her canvas, creating images and forms that may seem two-dimensional at first glance, but eventually reveal a more sculptural depth.
Her preference for nature-inspired forms and rhythms is evident in her work. She favors shapes that interact in a way that's organic, whether they're overlapping, leaning or laying. She skillfully navigates the fine line between ambiguity and representation, gradually developing each piece to its final form.
