About the artist
Johannes Beerstraaten, also known as Jan Abrahamsz (baptised on 1 March 1622 in Amsterdam and buried on 1 July 1666), was a well known Dutch artist. He was particularly known for his marine paintings, especially those depicting the First Anglo-Dutch and Dutch-Swedish Wars. His work also included striking cityscapes of Amsterdam and other Dutch cities and villages. Beerstraaten had a talent for capturing ports like Civitavecchia, churches, castles and buildings, even ones that have since disappeared.
