About the artist
Blanche was the son of a prominent psychiatrist who catered to the rich and influential. His artistic journey didn't include formal art school but he was privately tutored by painters Henri Gervex and Ferdinand Jacques Humbert. Despite his success, peers saw him as something of a dilettante, more drawn to fame than the progression of art.
Today, his work can be admired in several prestigious institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hermitage Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée d’Orsay, and the National Gallery. Blanche died in Offranville, France, on September 30, 1942.
