About the artist
In 1759, he turned his expertise into a practical guide with the publication of 'Erleichterte Artzney-Kräuterwissenschaft', a handbook that combined botany and medicinal plant studies, aimed at physicians and pharmacists. Schäffer dived into mycology, producing four comprehensive, illustrated volumes over two years from 1762.
He ventured into ornithology in 1774, proposing a unique bird classification system based on leg structure in 'Elementa Ornithologica'. This was followed by 'Museum Ornithologicum' in 1789, a detailed description of his bird collection. His encyclopedic work didn't stop there; in 1779, he published a three-volume work with 280 beautifully hand-coloured copper engraving plates, showcasing around 3,000 insects.
