About the artist

Born in 1759, Ignaz Albrecht was an Austrian engraver with a career starting around 1789. Meanwhile, Ferdinand Bernhard Vietz, born on 18 November 1772 and died on 15 December 1815 in Vienna, was a well known Austrian pharmacologist and a professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Vienna.

He is most recognised for his 11-volume series, Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum cum Earum Fructus ususque Descriptione, published between 1800 and 1822. This collection, a comprehensive compilation of medicinal, culinary, and decorative plant species, was widely referenced by early 19th-century pharmacologists.

After Vietz's untimely death, the esteemed engraver Ignaz Albrecht took over the project. He produced 1100 stunning hand-coloured copperplate engravings on watermark embossed paper, successfully completing the notable work.
