About the artist

Born as Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann in 1906, the German-American Horst P. Horst was a giant in 20th-century fashion photography. Raised in Weiβenfels-an-der-Saale, Germany, Horst became enamored with avant-garde art in his youth, thanks to a chance meeting with dancer Evan Weidemann. He moved from Hamburg to Paris post his studies in the 1920s, learning under architect Le Corbusier. It was in Paris he met Vogue's George Hoyningen-Huene, whose companion and aide he became, steering him towards photography.

Earning the title "photography's alchemist" from Vogue, Horst gained fame in Paris between the world wars. His innovative techniques, like double exposures and his daring use of nudity, birthed iconic images like Mainbocher Corset and Lisa with Harp. Beyond fashion, Horst's extensive portrait collection of luminaries displayed a wide array of influences from Surrealism to Romanticism. He loved capturing humanity, stating, "I like taking photographs, because I like life.
