About this artwork
Marilyn Monroe, born on June 1, 1926, and died on August 4, 1962, was a well known American actress, model, and singer. She's best recognised for her comedic 'blonde bombshell' roles in films made during Hollywood's Golden Age. Monroe was an instrumental figure in shifting perspectives on sexuality in the 50s and 60s. Even after her demise, she remains a significant pop culture figure. The image shown is from the 1953 romantic comedy 'How to Marry a Millionaire', where Monroe took on the role of Pola Debevoise, a scatterbrained blonde aiming to snag a wealthy husband. In this snapshot, Monroe is seen in a gold dress featuring a deep neckline, a creation of American costume designer William Travilla.
