About the artist
Le Sidaner was particularly skilled at using understated colours, favouring muted greys and opals. He applied these with irregular, speckled brushstrokes, conjuring an air of mystique and atmosphere. As a talented nocturne painter, he explored extensively across France and Europe before finally making Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside his home, where he continued to paint for over three decades.
Throughout his career, Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels garnered a wide collector base. His enchanting portrayals of the gardens he built in the remnants of Gerberoy's medieval fortress, complete with sun-dappled, recently deserted tables and overshadowed by roses, reaffirmed his reputation as a distinctive artist who doesn't neatly fit into a specific art movement.
