About the artist
Hans Ernest Unger (1915-1975) was a gifted artist from Prenzlau, Germany. His extensive training period took place at Jupp Wiertz's Berlin studio from 1934-36, where he refined his skills in poster design. After this experience, he relocated to South Africa, establishing himself as a freelance designer in Cape Town. In 1948, he moved to London. Between the years 1950 and 1974, Unger was well known for creating numerous posters for the London Underground and contributing to the development of the Blackhorse Road tube station. From 1966 to 1969, he was also a prominent member of the Art Workers’ Guild.
