About the artist
Born in Leeds, Williamson studied at the Leeds School of Art between 1911 to 1914 before moving to London to attend the Royal Academy schools. In his year there, he was honored with the Turner Gold Medal. His war experiences heavily influenced his artwork, and he created numerous works chronicling his war experiences and recovery journey.
Post-war, Williamson transitioned into a successful commercial artist, creating designs for Empire Marketing Board, the GPO, London Underground, and London Transport from 1922 to 1939. In 1930, he took on the role of Head of the Chelsea School of Art, a position he held until 1958. During his leadership, he brought on Henry Moore to spearhead a fresh sculpture department at the college.
