About this artwork

Gustav Klimt, an Austrian artist, spent his career creating a range of landscapes, all while keeping true to his unique decorative aesthetic. In 1916, he painted a distinctive piece featuring a church located in Unterach, a village on the southern edge of Austria's Lake Attersee. The church's unique feature was its onion-shaped steeple, which Klimt chose to depict in a fascinating red. This vibrant shade was reflected in other elements of the painting too, from windows to roofs. To draw the viewer's gaze to the church, Klimt cleverly used bursts of red, since the painting lacked perspective lines.

About the artist

Gustav Klimt (14 July 1862 – 6 February 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. His primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. Klimt's work was also influenced by Japanese art and its methods. He was a master of line and ornamental design, and his paintings often featured gold leaf. Klimt's personal life was often turbulent, and he suffered from severe depression in his later years.
