About the artist
Starting out as Oxfordshire wigmakers in 1856, Charles Gillman saw potential in the budding world of photography. In 1840, he founded the Gillman & Co. photography studio which he ran from 1882 until 1910. Later, the firm welcomed another photographer, James Soame, Jr., into its ranks. To this day, the business continues under the name Gillman & Soame. They've come a long way since their humble beginnings, even earning recognition from Queen Victoria within a decade of their formation.
