About the artist
Wegener moved to Copenhagen to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where she met Einar Wegener, her future husband and muse. Einar would go on to transition genders, becoming Lili Elbe, one of the earliest documented transitions. The pair married in 1904 and took up residence in Paris in 1912. Wegener's portraits of Elbe, along with her sensual illustrations and glass mosaics earned her high praise and wealthy Parisian patrons. She bagged two golds and a bronze at the 1925 World's Fair for her work.
After Elbe died in 1931, Wegener found it difficult to make ends meet and relocated back to Denmark. She died in Frederiksberg, Denmark, on July 28, 1940, at 54 years old.
