About the artist
His work was characterised by sophisticated studio arrangements with intricate lighting and shadow effects. He also pioneered modern open-air swimwear photography and was among the first to shoot models from above.
In 1943, he published two photography books, Hellas and Egypt, and soon after, relocated to Hollywood. Here he immersed himself in the film industry, photographing stars and consulting on colour for films like A Star Is Born.
George's works can be found in collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
