About this artwork

In 1918, a British artist by the name of Geoffrey Stephen Allfree created a piece known as 'A Dazzled Oiler with Escort'. This artwork showcases an oiler ship, accompanied by a smaller craft, set against the backdrop of white chalky cliffs. During World War II, ships were painted with unique patterns to confuse the enemy, a technique referred to as 'dazzling'. This particular print is color-accurate to the original, receiving the seal of approval from the Imperial War Museum. Every purchase of this piece contributes to the ongoing work of the museum.

About the artist

well known for his moving and stark memorial art pieces like the one dedicated to the lost cruiser HMS Hampshire, this artist tragically lost his life during the war. He was only 29 when on 29th September 1918, merely six weeks before the Armistice, HM Motor Launch No. 247, his craft, disappeared at sea.

During a powerful southerly gale which swiftly escalated to hurricane-like winds, a flotilla of four Motor Launches found themselves in St Ives Bay, seeking refuge. As the storm intensified, they tried to maneuver into deeper waters. Unfortunately, Allfree's launch experienced engine problems about a mile away from Clodgy Point and began to drift towards Oar Rock. St. Ives' lifeboat sped towards the distressed ship, but arrived just minutes too late. The launch had already collided with the rock and blown up, probably due to the detonation of its depth charges, leaving behind just one survivor.

Many of his works are part of the National Collection in the UK and are exhibited at different public sites. The Imperial War Museum houses around 53 of his pieces.
