About the artist
During a powerful southerly gale which swiftly escalated to hurricane-like winds, a flotilla of four Motor Launches found themselves in St Ives Bay, seeking refuge. As the storm intensified, they tried to maneuver into deeper waters. Unfortunately, Allfree's launch experienced engine problems about a mile away from Clodgy Point and began to drift towards Oar Rock. St. Ives' lifeboat sped towards the distressed ship, but arrived just minutes too late. The launch had already collided with the rock and blown up, probably due to the detonation of its depth charges, leaving behind just one survivor.
Many of his works are part of the National Collection in the UK and are exhibited at different public sites. The Imperial War Museum houses around 53 of his pieces.
