About this artwork

This poster was released by London Transport back in 1968. The mastermind behind its design was Fred Millett, and the goal was to encourage people to venture out into London when night falls. Millett's collage tapped into the popular Pop Art trend of the time, resulting in a vibrant and engaging poster. All forms of London's night time entertainment like theatre, cinema, ballet, late-night shopping, restaurants, and even the city's spectacularly illuminated buildings and monuments are promoted in the text underneath. This art piece is an accurate replica of the original poster, housed in the historic archive of the London Transport Museum. Each purchase contributes to the museum's ongoing work.

About the artist

Born in 1920, Fred Millett, a British muralist and poster artist, lived until 1980. His work graced the Festival of Britain and he undertook commissions from London County Council, London Transport, National Westminster Bank, York University, and the General Post Office.

Millett's education was at the Central School of Art in London. His primary focus was on murals and poster art, which was showcased at the Festival of Britain.

Around 1952, he created murals depicting Autumn, Winter, and Summer at St Crispin's School in Wokingham, Berkshire. Then, from the mid-1960s, he imparted his knowledge in Perception and Communication at the Polytechnic of Central London.
