About the artist
Born between 1585 and 1588, Floris van Schooten was the offspring of Gerrit Jacbsz van Schooten, an affluent Catholic from Amsterdam. His family relocated to Haarlem in 1612 to escape Protestant hostility. The same year, Floris wed, becoming the father of four, including a son Johannes who followed in his artistic footsteps. Floris, who died on November 14, 1656, left approximately 120 masterpieces, spanning diverse still-life themes.
His portfolio not only echoes the contemporary innovations in Dutch still-life painting but also reflects influences from the Haarlem guild's artists and large-scale market scene creators of the previous century like Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer.
