Between 1933 and 1936, she contributed murals at Brockley School, partnering with her romantic partner and RCA mentor, Cyril Mahoney (1903–1968). In 1937, they jointly created "Gardeners’ Choice". Dunbar established the Blue Gallery in Rochester in 1938, featuring her pieces alongside works of Edward Bawden (1903–1989), Barnett Freedman (1901–1958), and more. In 1940, the WAAC appointed her as the sole full-time female war artist. Her only individual display took place in Withersdane, Wye, Kent, in 1953, although her works were featured in numerous WAAC traveling exhibitions from Aberdeen Art Gallery to MOMA, New York.
