About the artist
Born in London, Ellis Silas (1885-1972), son of Louis Silas, was a well known painter, writer, and stained glass artist. Training under his father and Walter Sickert, Silas gained acclaim for his landscapes and marine studies. He served as a war artist for the Australian government in WWI and authored Crusading at Anzac. His travels in Papua influenced A Primitive Arcadia. His artwork is exhibited in Hereford City Museum, Fine Art Society, and the British Museum. Silas resided in London.
