About the artist
Edward Robert Hughes, a well known English painter, was celebrated for his ethereal artworks depicting faeries, maidens, and mythological figures. Using watercolours and gouache, he achieved a gentle luminosity. Born in London to a Welsh family, Hughes received early guidance from his uncle, painter Arthur Hughes. Encouraged by his uncle, he joined the Royal Academy where he met notable artists like Walter Crane. Hughes showcased his portraits at the Royal Academy, while his preferred venues, including the Royal Watercolour Society, exhibited his symbolic and pre-Raphaelite influenced pieces. Abroad, he gained admiration in Germany, Austria, and Venice.
