Edward McKnight Kauffer, a highly talented and globally revered poster artist from 1920-50, was an American who studied painting in Paris prior to World War I. Settling in London in 1914, he dominated England's poster hoardings during the interwar period. Kauffer revolutionised advertising design, emphasizing the incorporation of the highest visual values. With his exceptional design skills, integrity, and charismatic personality, he gained international acclaim. Initially influenced by Van Gogh and French Post-Impressionists, he embraced the Camden Town artists' impasto technique. He later explored Cubism and geometrical design, evident in his wood-engravings like Flight. Kauffer's work as a designer fascinated millions, well known for its radical innovation, stunning colour palettes, and irresistible appeal. Esteemed individuals such as Roger Fry, T. S. Eliot, and Aldous Huxley supported his endeavor to elevate advertising to the level befitting a civilised society.
