About the artist
Edward Henry Potthast, an American Impressionist, was born on June 10, 1857, in Cincinnati, OH. He studied at the McMicken School of Design under Thomas Satterwhite Noble and later joined the Strobridge Lithography Company. Potthast traveled to Europe, attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and discovering the French Impressionists in Paris. After returning to the US, he supported himself as a lithographer until the age of 39. Moving to New York in the 1890s, he became a magazine illustrator and exhibited at the National Academy of Design. Potthast died on March 9, 1927, in New York, NY. His artworks are now housed in various institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Art Institute of Chicago.
