About the artist
Edward Augustus Bowles, a passionate gardener born in May 1865, came from a line of affluent Huguenot refugees who settled in England to escape persecution. Despite losing sight in one eye, he excelled academically, joining the 'Bug and Tick club' at Cambridge and becoming a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society. Bowles traveled extensively, collecting plant specimens and transforming his childhood haven, Myddelton House, with a rock garden. He authored articles and books, painted vibrant flora, and cultivated a well known crocus collection. His legacy lives on through his donated paintings.
