About the artist
Edmund Blair Leighton (1853-1922) was a British painter of historical genre scenes, specializing in Regency and medieval subjects. He was a member of the Royal Academy and was well known for his attention to detail and historical accuracy. Leighton was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the works of John Everett Millais. Leighton was a successful artist and was awarded a knighthood in 1925. He was also a founding member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
