About this artwork

Cirque Fernando was a popular circus in France, situated near Place Pigalle in Paris. It was conveniently located close to the residence of the well known impressionist artist, Edgar Degas. In one of his paintings, Degas masterfully portrayed the performer, Miss La La, being lifted up to the circus roof by her teeth. The fascinating perspective of looking up from the ground places the viewer right in the audience, creating a feeling of being part of the scene. This print is meticulously color-matched to the original and has been given the green light by the National Gallery. Every purchase you make contributes to the ongoing work of the museum.

About the artist

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French Impressionist artist well known for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings of ballet dancers, race horses, and other scenes of modern life. He was a master of the use of pastels and is particularly identified with the subject of the dance. Degas also explored the expressive potential of photography, and was an early adopter of the medium. He was a close friend of many Impressionist painters, including Mary Cassatt and Édouard Manet.
