About this artwork

Here we have a Dachshund puppy, affectionately known as Turps or Tirpz, names that are short for either Tirpitz or Turpentine. This adorable pup is lounging about on a chair, and interestingly, it's Aldin's very own dog. This illustration comes from Cecil Aldin's work in 'An Artist's Models', circa 1930.

About the artist

Cecil Aldin was a British artist and illustrator known for his charming and humorous depictions of animals and rural life. He was born in Slough in 1870 and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Aldin was a prolific artist, producing over 3,000 works during his lifetime. He was also a successful author, publishing several books of his own work.

Also associated with: Punch Magazine, The Graphic, The Illustrated London News, The Tatler, The Sphere, The Bystander.
