About this artwork

This excellent print is inspired by a watercolour depicting Dianthus chinensis (Chinese pink) done by Caroline Maria Applebee around 1838. Born in 1799, Applebee hailed from London and seemed to be a product of a well-off middle-class family. They owned conservatories and greenhouses, which gave her the chance to interact with the flora she used as subjects for her paintings.

About the artist

Caroline Maria Applebee, an English watercolour artist, was born in London. She was baptised in Canterbury and was the eldest daughter of Reverend John Applebee and Grace Lukyn. Having never married, she resided in and around Colchester throughout her life. Her father, an Oxford graduate and clergyman, died in 1825.

Her extensive collection of watercolour paintings and drawings featuring 19th-century plants is housed in the Lindley Library of the Royal Horticultural Society. She benefited from the nearby botanical gardens until their closure in 1852. In 1854, she died at the age of 69 and was buried in Colchester. Her will included valuable possessions and three albums of flower drawings, which were later sold to the Royal Horticultural Society. Applebee's work gained recognition after the introduction of mass colour printing.

Applebee enjoyed the friendship of Charles Lamb, who dedicated an acrostic poem to her.
