About this artwork

Berthe Morisot, a French artist, was part of the group of Parisian artists that came to be recognised as the Impressionists. This painting, which features Morisot's younger sister Edma in a relaxed pose in a meadow, engrossed in a book, is one of her works. She has used color accents to highlight the pattern on Edma's dress and also to represent blossoms in the grass, a technique prevalent in the landscapes of her mentor, Camille Corot. This painting, known as La lecture, was showcased in the inaugural Impressionist exhibition in 1874.

About the artist

Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker. She was a pivotal figure in the development of Impressionism, and was the only female artist to exhibit in all eight of the Impressionist exhibitions. Her works often depicted scenes of everyday life, and her style was characterised by a delicate use of colour and light. She was also a close friend of Édouard Manet, and her sister, Edma, was also a painter. Morisot's personal life was marked by tragedy, as her husband and daughter both died young.
